Walk into any changing room these days and you'll spot them players cutting the feet off their team socks and pulling on a pair of grip socks underneath. It's become one of football's biggest trends at every level. But are grip socks actually worth it, or is it just hype?
Let's break it down.
What exactly are grip socks?
Grip socks are football socks with special anti-slip pads printed on the inside and outside of the foot. The inside grip stops your foot sliding around inside your boot, while the outside grip helps your boot stay locked to the sock. The result: less internal slipping and more stability.
How they improve your game
When your foot slips inside your boot, you lose power, balance and a split second of control — and in football, split seconds matter. By keeping your foot locked in place, grip socks give you:
Sharper turns. Your foot moves with your boot, not against it, so you can change direction faster.
Better control. More stability means cleaner touches and stronger strikes.
Fewer blisters. Less friction inside the boot means less rubbing.
Are they suitable for young players?
Absolutely. Young footballers are still developing their balance and technique, so anything that improves stability helps. Grip socks work in boots, trainers and astros, making them ideal for training, matches and the cage.
How to wear them
Most players wear grip socks instead of (or underneath) their normal socks. If you're playing in a team kit, wear the grip sock first, then your team sock over the top many players cut the foot off the team sock so the grip still works.
So, are they worth it?
For the small price, the boost in control and comfort is hard to argue with. Once most players try grip socks, they don't go back.
